What Is IFIO?

Intimacy From the Inside Out (IFIO) is a couples therapy model rooted in Internal Family Systems (IFS).

Relationships have an incredible ability to activate our most vulnerable places. One partner becomes critical while the other withdraws. One pursues connection while the other needs space. One wants to talk until things feel resolved while the other becomes overwhelmed and shuts down.

Before long, both people may be reacting not only to each other, but from protective parts that are trying to prevent hurt, rejection, abandonment, criticism, control, or disconnection.

IFIO helps us slow these cycles down and understand what is happening underneath them.

Rather than deciding who is right or wrong, we become curious about the protective responses each person brings into the relationship — and the more vulnerable feelings and needs those responses may be protecting.

Why IFIO Couples Therapy?

Many couples already know they need to “communicate better.”

The problem is that communication skills can become very difficult to use when the relationship touches something deeper.

You may genuinely intend to listen differently, stay calm, or express yourself more clearly — and then suddenly find yourself defending, pursuing, withdrawing, explaining, criticizing, shutting down, or saying something you regret.

IFIO helps couples work with what is happening underneath the communication problem.

As each partner develops greater awareness of their own internal reactions, there is more opportunity to speak for those reactions rather than from them.

Instead of:

“You never listen to me.”

there may eventually be room for:

“There's a part of me that gets scared when I don't feel you with me.”

That shift can change the emotional experience of a conversation. Partners become less focused on defending themselves against one another and more able to understand what is actually happening between them.

Over time, this work can help couples develop greater emotional safety, accountability, compassion, vulnerability, and connection — while still allowing each person to have their own needs, boundaries, and perspective.

What Does a Session Feel Like?

IFIO is active and experiential. We aren't simply talking about your relationship — we're paying close attention to what happens between you in the room.

When a familiar pattern begins to emerge, I may help slow the conversation down.

Rather than continuing the argument, we might pause and notice what is happening inside each of you. What part just showed up? What is it trying to protect? What is happening underneath the anger, defensiveness, urgency, or withdrawal?

As we understand those protective responses, we can begin helping each partner communicate from a more grounded and vulnerable place.

Sometimes you will be exploring your own internal experience. Sometimes you will be listening differently to your partner's experience. And sometimes I will help you speak directly to one another in ways that allow something new to happen between you.

The goal isn't to eliminate conflict or ensure that you always agree.

It's to help you recognize when protective patterns have taken over, understand what those patterns are trying to accomplish, and increasingly find your way back to yourselves — and to each other — with greater clarity, curiosity, courage, and care.
