What Is a Couples Intensive?
A couples therapy intensive is an extended session that gives us more time to understand and work with the patterns that keep pulling you and your partner away from one another.
Couples often come to therapy already knowing the cycle they get caught in. One person pursues while the other withdraws. One becomes critical while the other becomes defensive. A conversation starts with good intentions and somehow ends in the same painful place.
In a traditional therapy hour, we may begin slowing that cycle down just as it’s time to wrap up.
An intensive gives us more room.
Using an IFS- and IFIO-informed approach, we can explore not only what happens between you, but what happens inside each of you when the relationship becomes activated — the protective reactions that emerge, what they are trying to prevent, and the more vulnerable feelings and needs that may be underneath them.

Why Choose a Couples Intensive?
Relationship patterns are rarely just communication problems.
You may already know that you should listen differently, stay calmer, stop getting defensive, give each other space, or express your needs more clearly.
But when something important is at stake, those intentions can disappear quickly.
Protective parts take over. One partner may push harder for connection while another retreats. Anger may cover hurt. Defensiveness may protect against shame. Withdrawal may protect against overwhelm.
And suddenly you’re no longer having the conversation you intended to have.
A couples intensive gives us enough uninterrupted time to slow these moments down and understand them while they are happening.
An intensive may be especially helpful if:
-
You keep getting caught in the same conflict despite understanding the pattern
-
Conversations quickly become defensive, overwhelming, or disconnected
-
You love one another but struggle to reach each other during difficult moments
-
There has been a rupture or significant issue that needs focused attention
-
You want to understand the deeper emotional dynamics beneath recurring conflict
-
Traditional weekly sessions feel too short or fragmented for the work you want to do
-
You want dedicated time to focus on your relationship without immediately committing to ongoing weekly couples therapy
A couples intensive isn't about solving your entire relationship in one session.
It's about creating enough time and space for something different to happen inside a pattern that may normally move very quickly.

What Does a Couples Intensive Feel Like?
We begin by identifying what brings you in, what each of you is experiencing in the relationship, and what you most hope to understand or change.
From there, we slow things down.
Rather than spending hours debating the details of who said what or determining who was right, I’ll help you pay attention to the emotional process underneath the disagreement.
When a familiar pattern begins to appear, we may pause.
What just happened inside you?
What did you hear your partner saying?
What part of you showed up in response?
What is that part trying to protect?
As each partner becomes more aware of their own internal experience, there is often more room to communicate for your parts rather than from them.
Instead of reacting automatically, you may begin to recognize and express the fear, hurt, longing, overwhelm, or need underneath the protective response.
The extended format gives us time to stay with these moments without rushing them.
There is room for breaks, reflection, individual internal work, conversations between partners, and opportunities to practice relating to one another differently.
The goal isn't to eliminate conflict or force reconciliation. It is to create a space where both partners can better understand themselves, understand the pattern between them, and discover whether they can meet one another with greater clarity, accountability, compassion, and connection.
