Couples Therapy Intensives: What They Are and How They Can Help

For couples who are tired of having the same painful conversation in different forms

Many couples do not need more talking.

They need enough time and support to slow down the pattern they keep getting pulled into.

By the time couples seek deeper support, there is often a lot beneath the surface:

  • accumulated hurt

  • defensiveness

  • misattunement

  • shutdown

  • protest

  • reactivity

  • longing that keeps getting buried under the cycle

A couples intensive creates enough space to step out of the usual loop and begin understanding what is happening underneath it.

This work is not about deciding who is right.

It is about helping each person see:

  • what gets activated in them

  • what they protect with

  • what they long for underneath

  • and how the two of you keep getting caught in a pattern neither of you actually wants

This is where couples often begin to move from:

blame → understanding

reactivity → reflection

protection → connection

My couples work is informed by IFS/IFIO, attachment theory, trauma-informed practice, and a deep respect for the complexity of intimate relationships.

I help couples slow things down enough to see the cycle clearly, understand the deeper organizing issues underneath it, and begin relating in a different way.

Couples Intensives may be especially helpful for:

  • recurring conflict or gridlock

  • communication breakdowns

  • defensiveness, shutdown, or escalation

  • emotional disconnection

  • trust ruptures and repair

  • blended family / parenting stress

  • major transitions or relationship crossroads

  • painful relational patterns that keep repeating despite good intentions

Why a Longer Format Can Help

In weekly therapy, many people spend a significant part of the session just arriving — mentally, emotionally, and physically.

By the time the deeper material begins to emerge, the session is often ending.

With a longer format, we have more room to:

  • settle in fully

  • build and maintain momentum

  • stay with what matters long enough for it to shift

  • work in a way that feels less fragmented and more complete

This can be especially helpful if you:

  • tend to need time to access deeper material

  • feel like you “just get somewhere” when the hour ends

  • want a more focused, immersive process

For many people, an intensive allows us to cover in one sitting what might otherwise take many weeks of stop-and-start work.
